| It is a great pleasure for us to invite you and your publication to the Oslo Climate and Forest Conference (Oslo CFC) on 27 May 2010. The conference is hosted by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. In Oslo, countries will come together to establish the first real example of a genuine global partnership to fight climate change. The main purpose of the Oslo CFC is to enable effective, transparent and coordinated fast action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, called REDD+. In order to achieve the emissions reduction potential in tropical forests, global efforts to pool and coordinate resources and actions must begin immediately. By establishing the first global, sector wide, transparent, significantly funded and coordinated fast action climate change partnership, the conference could be a major milestone in the efforts of the international community to combat global warming. At the same time, it could provide important input to the formal negotiations on REDD+ and serve as a stepping stone to a successful outcome on REDD+ in Mexico in December. The establishment of a REDD+ partnership would be in line with decisions taken by the Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which has encouraged the Parties to undertake coordinated efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. Moreover, the Copenhagen Accord recognises the critical role of forests in mitigating climate change, and calls for immediate action to provide positive incentives for developing countries in their efforts to reduce forest emissions. We sincerely hope that you will be able to attend the conference and cover the establishment of the Informal REDD+ Partnership on behalf of your publication/media outlet. | |
